Contributions of Prisoners sentenced to Death in the USA

There are currently between 20,000 and 40,000 people sentenced to death throughout the world. At the end of 2017, over 2,800 people were under a death sentence in the USA alone. With almost no access to the outside world, the imprisonment itself inflicts considerable physical and psychological suffering, some cases amounting to torture. In some countries, lack of sufficient nutrition or medical treatment, in addition to excessive physical force inside the prisons, results in inmates dying before execution dates have been set for them. In other cases, inmates commit suicide because they are unable to bear the inhumane circumstances.

The 16th World Day Against the Death Penalty on the 10th October 2018, initiated by the World Coalition Against The Death Penalty (WCADP), was held under the motto "Dignity For All" and is dedicated to the living conditions on death row. The German Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (GCADP) collected reports for this purpose from American prisoners currently under sentence of death, in order to give the outside world an inside view of people and places. Much is recounted about this but very little of the reality is actually known.

The members of GCADP are aware of the severity of crimes that the majority of inmates on death row have committed. The fact that we advocate for the complete abolition of the death penalty worldwide does not mean in the least that we would ever trivialize any of these crimes and our condolences go out to all the victims and their relatives. Within our means, we also try to support organisations dedicated to victims. However, even a criminal is a human being and there is much more to a person than the crime for which he/she was convicted.
